Situated 2,600 meters above sea level at the base of the Guadalupe and Monserrate mountains, Bogotá is the capital of Colombia and one of South America's premier cultural destinations. Patrons of the arts are spoiled for choice with the city's museums, art galleries, performing theaters, and national monuments. So impressive is Bogotá's collection of libraries and academic institutions that the city has earned the nickname 'The Athens of South America.' The historic center of La Candelaria boasts many of these offerings, as well as some truly stunning historic architecture. Must-see attractions in Bogotá include the weird and wonderful Botero Museum; the famous Gold Museum, filled with astonishing displays of gold items and pre-Hispanic art; and the atmospheric and grand San Francisco Church, with origins dating back to around 1557.
Discover the secrets of a bygone era in San Agustín, a small, ancient town in the Colombian department of Huila, marked by quaint cobblestone streets, a few bars and restaurants, and its remarkable place in pre-Columbian history as home to the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Park, a collection of extraordinary discoveries showcasing some of South America's largest megalithic sculptures, religious monuments, and intricate carvings of mythological beasts. Step into the past and marvel at the multitude of larger-than-life statues scattered among a picturesque landscape filled with forested hills and canyons. However, Pereira has a charm all its own. Its café culture, nightlife, and entertainment scene are further enhanced by its large, lively student population, and the city boasts a number of fascinating museums, state-of-the-art shopping malls, and some landmarks such as the Naked Bolír Monument and the Viaduct built in honor of former President César Gaviria.
